OUR HISTORY
The story of TIMUN began in 2012, when a group of passionate students at Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) came together to form the university’s first Model United Nations Society. With a shared commitment to diplomacy, dialogue, and the values of the United Nations, they laid the foundation for what would become one of the most respected youth-led initiatives in the region.
For years, the TIMUN Society organized local and national MUN conferences, creating space for young people to practice negotiation, policy-making, and international cooperation.
A turning point came in 2019 with the launch of the first Tashkent International Model UN Conference. Bringing together more than 500 participants from across the globe, TIMUN 2019 marked the beginning of a truly global chapter. That year, TIMUN was recognized as “The Best Youth Social Project of 2019” by the Youth Union of Uzbekistan and received strong support from the UNODC Regional Office, among other partners.
Even amid global challenges, the Society remained active. In 2021, TIMUN addressed pandemic-era issues, engaging over 250 participants in discussions centered around the Kyoto Declaration and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Beyond the annual conference, TIMUN continues to contribute to global youth initiatives. The Society has taken part in the UN’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence for three consecutive years and regularly celebrates UN Day through collaborative programming with UN agencies focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In 2023, TIMUN expanded its mission beyond borders by organizing the first-ever Turkmenistan Ashgabat International Model UN Conference (TAMUN) in Turkmenistan, marking a historic step for MUN diplomacy in the region.
That same year, TIMUN 2023 reached new heights. Under the theme “One UN” and the slogan “Together for a Better World, Together for SDGs #LeaveNoOneBehind,” the conference brought together nearly 600 participants, simulating 11 UN committees with the support of UNFPA, UNODC, UN Women, and national ministries.
In 2024, TIMUN’s efforts were internationally recognized with the SDG Award presented by the UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan. This award honored TIMUN’s commitment to inclusive youth engagement, education, and advocacy for the Sustainable Development Goals across Uzbekistan and beyond.
Now, in 2025, TIMUN enters a new chapter. TIMUN 2025 focuses on youth as agents of transformation in a changing world, echoing the spirit of the Pact for the Future. With 400+ delegates, 8 diverse committees, and the direct involvement of UN experts, this year’s conference places young voices at the forefront of global dialogue — not only to imagine the future, but to shape it.
From a campus initiative to a regionally recognized movement, TIMUN’s journey is far from over — and it continues to grow, led by the belief that real diplomacy begins with youth.
